Dublin Intermediate 2010

The Dublin Intermediate cross country took place last Sunday in a cold Tymon park.  Conditions were a little soft  under foot but felt a world away from last year when the runners had to avoid swans on the course.

With some of our top runners sunning themselves in Lanzarote this week it was an inexperienced team taking part.  Both the womens and mens team did very well. The women taking bronze, coming in 3rd. The men came in 6th out of ten teams. Both races had clear winners on the day.  Well done to all 98 athletes who braved chilly conditions to compete in the championships. It’s was great to see such a large number of supporters out on the day shouting for Sportsworld. Special thanks to Lucy who was dealing with all the logistics.

Good win for Eimear in Ennis

Saturday November 20th – report from Packie

Ennis – Eimear had a victory over strong opposition in this 5k road race held at the weekend. The race is an Irish Sports Council initiative, and was the first of a four race series. It’s organised by Clare Sports Partnership and there is one every month from November to February. Entry fee is a recession-friendly fiver per race and is open to everybody. Well done Eimear.

Meet and Train : Lucan 2010

Winter Meet and Train race series kicked off in Lucan on Sunday 7th November. Sportsworld is represented by six teams this year. Due to other racing commitments a lot of top runners were not able to attend this race but we were still able to take 5 of top ten places. Orla Jordan and Orlagh Fleming from B team were fourth and fifth. Emma Fitzpatrick came eight. Sibeal Waldron had a really good run and came ninth scoring valuable points for team C. Ann Higgins was tenth.

Well done to everybody who showed up regardless muddy conditions and chilly weather. After the first race our B team is definitely on the lead but other Sportsworld teams scored well. Let’s keep up the good work and see you in Raheny on Sun 28th Nov.

Girls narrowly pipped for Dublin title

Santry demense – The scene of last December’s European XC played host to this year’s Dublin Senior XC; and although there was a moderately soggy under footing at least it was dry with no wind.

Senior Women

DSD’s Hazel Murphy was a gun to tape winner extending her lead on every lap, but behind her an intact group fizzled out over the three laps. On the second lap we were ahead on points with our five girls running in the top fourteen. Aoife always looked like 2nd or 3rd as she ran 90% of the race neck and neck with Raheny’s Aoife Talty. However the latter died away in the last 400m, with DSD’s Bryony Treston finishing like a train to get up to second, and this proved decisive for the team title. Bryony had conserved her energy by running back in the third group for most of the race. Eimear, Crona and Jean (who were part of that third group) also ran excellently to complete the scoring; but all of our girls struggled in the heavy conditions when compared to the Gerry Farnham XC two weeks ago. We will have a stronger squad when Lucy recovers from last week’s Dublin city marathon, and the biggest prize is five months away so there’s plenty of time to prepare for it.

Senior Men

Phil was our sole entry for this, he eased into it having been 26th on the first lap and he picked off runners in each lap to end up 22nd. Well done Phil, you were the picture of calmness! At the sharper end of this half-sized race (48 runners going to post when there’s normally 100), a top group of 14 kept it together for the first two of six laps. Then DSD’s Joe Sweeney must have thrown in a sub 4:30 mile as the whole field was strung apart on the third lap. He kept up this relentless pressure and lapped half of the field, and his five club mates finished in the top third of the race to regain their team crown.

Well done to DSD for winning both senior titles on the day, and well done to all runners for partaking in these highly competitive races.

XC – Belvedere Novice 2010

Last weekend the Leinster Novice was held in Mullingar. Sportsworld had a mens and womens team. Helen White had a great run finishing 2nd in the Masters race in 10:35. The womens team had a great  day taking second place. The mens team  whilst not at full strength ran well also. It’s great to see a large number of new runners taking part in the Novice races.  The next Leinster race is Adamstown on the 7th. This will be a step up to a 10K race.

Dublin Novice 2010

The first cross country race of the year took place yesterday over the Munich lap in the Phoenix Park. Sportsworld had a large number of athletes in attendance and a great bunch of supporters out on the course. The standout perfomances of the day go to Ciara Foster in the womens race and Carole Cronin in the mens Both proved a force to be reckoned with coming in 7th and 12th positions.

It was great to see large teams out with allot of runners new to cross country taking part. Unfortunately there was to be  no team prizes this year with both the mens and womens team coming in 5th.

Well done all. It wont be so dry next time.

Rathfarnham 5K

Sunday, September 27th

Terenure – Our senior women’s team were out in full force on Sunday at the Rathfarnham 5K. The early start (10 am) and the late night before it (as it was the club coach Emily’s birthday) proved not to be a barrier for our runners. Conditions were ideal for fast running, which meant that many earned 5K road PBs.

The team were led home by Aoife and she was followed closely by her sister Crona. Despite 15m the day before it, 18m on Wednesday and 22m the previous Sunday Lucy proved that she still has the speed in her legs as she finished just outside 18 mins; and a few seconds later Jean arrived to finish our quartet. Fresh from her Ironman success in Zurich, Aideen won her age category. Well done to all.
