Recent Race Roundup

One of our top contributors to the club website Packie has written a few race reports from races that took place over the past few weeks.

Ballycotton 10m 2011 – Sunday March 6th 2011
Ballycotton – There were some fine Sportsworld performances at the Ballycotton 10 mile road race in County Cork. The famous race is sold out six months in advance and is known overseas for its hospitality. Amongst the large field of competitors, Lucy was 8th. Well done Lucy.

BHAA Garda XC – March 5th 2011

Phoenix Park – With AAI cross country championships finished for the year, the season is in its dying embers. But there are still a few to be found, and amongst them was a 2 mile cross country race organised by the Business Houses Athletics Association. We had four girls in the top twelve. Well done to the Bradys, Jean and Sandra.

National Inter Club XC 2011

Saturday, February 26th

Santry Demesne – The Athletics Association of Ireland Woodies DIY National Inter Clubs Cross Country Championships were held in Santry Demense Dublin on Saturday on an excellent cross country course with some patches of  heavy underfoot conditions. There was a strong breeze with sunny spells and scattered showers.

A small field of six teams assembled for the women’s race, with all the big stars missing. UK based Ava Hutchinson from Dundrum South Dublin (DSD) was a clear winner. She also led her team home to a narrow five point victory over Raheny Shamrocks. DSD completed a clean sweep of team titles on the day, winning all junior and senior male and female races.

Our seven Sportsworld girls, led home by Jean, gave their best over the eight kilometre course, and were rewarded with bronze medals. Well done girls.

In the mens race, Joe Sweeney from DSD made all the running from the start. This came two weeks after running a 30 kilometre road race in Holland in 94 minutes. Garry Thornton from Galway City Harriers was the only athlete to put him under pressure for the first three laps out of seven, and he paid a heavy price over the final four laps to drop off the pace. Joe Sweeney won easily in (38mins . 42secs) from his club mate Breandán O Neill.

Our men, led home by Phil, didn’t disgrace themselves either at this pinnacle level of Irish competition, coming 13th out of 21 teams and thus maintaining their A status for another year.

That night most people that ran, along with other club mates, socialised at Toast in Rathmines and later The Globe on George’s St, glad that the hardship of cross country and the winter were finished for another year.

Senior Team Training Week

The men’s and women’s senior cross country teams recently spent a week in Aguadulce near Almeria in southern Spain.  Why Aguadulce?  Dave Clark a long time Sportsworld member moved there in mid 2010 to work as an English language teacher in the local school district. Special thanks to Dave without whom the trip wouldn’t have happened, Dave put incredible effort into planning a week of intense training, great accommodation and transport logistics.

Special praise must also go to all those who helped get us there. Thanks to the committee, everyone who attended and organised the table quiz fundraiser, Emily and all those in Dublin who helped get the trip planned and organised. Too many names to fully list but of course allot of planning and organisation goes into getting these things organised behind the scenes and your support was much appreciated by everyone involved.

We arrived into Malaga on Sunday the 6th to get the most of the early afternoon sun. After picking up our Opel Astra cars outside the airport we sped off towards Almeria. The journey is a little over 200K but seemed long and windy after an early morning flight. The scenery in this part of Spain is spectacular with incredible views of the Sierra Nevada.

We were greeted in Aguadulce by Dave and Phil who had arrived into a bit earlier because of flight logistics. Whilst the two Dublin lads were wearing their shorts the locals were sporting winter coats and scarves.  What a difference a two hour flight makes in people’s perception of warm versus cold.

We were greeted by spectacular views when we got to Dave’s apartment. Accommodation for the week was organised by Dave, the girls Aoife, Crona, Emily, Jean and Lucy stayed with Dave in his 3 bedroom apartment.  The lads were stating with Dave’s good friend Tor. A real gentleman Tor offered to have 3 pale Irish guys cramp his bachelor lifestyle for a week and stay at his apartment. We finished off our arrival with a 30 minute jog around Aguadulce and a bite to eat in a local restaurant.

Now down to the training sessions. I’m fairly confident nobody on the trip apart from Emily had ever done so much running in a week, even during marathon training.   We ran twice a day apart from the Friday and also included an hour long core session, resistance band training with Lucy or stretching session each day.

Listed below are the sessions we did over the course of the six days.

Monday – AM 10 mile temp | PM 30 minutes easy

Tuesday – AM Hills and Sprints x 10 | PM 45 minutes easy

Wednesday – AM 80 minute tempo | PM 45 minutes easy

Thursday – AM 10x800M | PM 45 minutes easy

Friday – AM   1 hour easy

Saturday – AM 4|3|2|1 session doing 3 sets in 47 minutes | PM 45 minutes easy

During some of the toughest sessions I’ve ever done Dave and Emily was always on hand to give encouragement to anyone falling behind in the final stages.  Dave also took on the role of sports photographer for the week and captured allot of shots of everyone in action. The photos will be up in the Gallery section.

The  location was perfect with a mammoth hill for hills and sprints on the Tuesday, fantastic off-road conditions  for the run on Wednesday and great 800 metre uphill  track for the  Thursday interval session.

The trip was incredibly enjoyable. Everyone put in 110% effort to complete every session, stretching class and recovery run. With only a week to go until the senior cross country everyone is in great form to perform well on the day. The trip will also stand to everyone for the upcoming relays in April and give a great based for the upcoming road and track seasons.

Additional highlights included Dave’s great cd mixes, an excuse to eat allot of good quality home cooked food, sunshine for a week, great company and the savage eye. A strong hard week again this week will see us well setup to do well on the 26th.

National Intermediate 2011

The National Masters and Intermediate championships were held at the ALSAA complex on Sunday, along with the National Juvenile B Cross Country Championships and also the Celtic U23 international races. A week of wet and stormy weather meant that walking out through the flat pitches to where the action began felt spongy, as the pitches were waterlogged. So it was inevitable that the course would cut up deeply with hundreds of spike wearing athletes due to run.

Ploughing through six inches of muck was the order of the day, and there wasn’t a patch of grass where you could open up your stride. It was a struggle to stay upright, and many athletes dropped like flies. This was true hardman cross country, in similar conditions to when John Treacy won his two world cross countries in Glasgow and then Limerick in the late 1970’s. Anyway it was the same conditions for everybody, and the strong survived.

Helen was our best competitor on the day – she always races well despite limited training. She set a fast pace from the gun with the leaders, and had the strength endurance to hold it for the 20 min duration of the race. She was in fifth place for most of it and lost a place in the last 300m, but it was still a brilliant performance given that she was up with the country’s top runners – including Beijing 2008 Olympian Pauline Curley. She came home with two national silver medals – an individual one for the F2 category, along with scoring for the second placed Dublin side in the county championships.

The master’s men were next to wade through the custard, and Peter Matthews powered straight through the slop for a gun to tape victory. There were no diagonal runs to try and find any dryer patches for him, just straight through instead.

In the intermediate women’s contest, Stephanie and Máiread recorded good top twenty finishes to lead our team to sixth place. This paved the way for the final race of the day – the intermediate men; where Karole was the best Sportsworld athlete.

Many thanks to the enthusiasm showed by Myles Nugent and Paul O’Connell, who encouraged the troops to run their best in the absence of Emily (who’s away on a training trip with both senior teams).

Great day in Tullamore

Sportsworld had great team and individual performances at the National Novice XC in Tullamore today. Very damp conditions underfoot meant the going was tough at Charleville Demesne. Add to that fields of well over 100 runners in each race.  Highlight of the day was the womens team taking 3rd place in a very competitive race. The mens team were 15th.

Meet and Train Tymon Park

After a long break the Meet and Train is back. The race which was hosted by Sportsworld took place in Tymon Park on Sunday 9th.
Many familiar faces showed up to help before and after the race leading to the smoothly run event. Also appreciated are those who came to cheer for us along the course. Regardless of the freezing cold and muddy conditions most of our teams had enough runners to score. As usual, our A team absolutely dominated the top ten places. Mairead O’Callaghan was first, Ruth Kelly finiahed second and Susan McDonnell third! Louis Nolan was eighth. Also, Catriona Higgins and Orla Jordan from team B finished in top ten. Well done!

Full results and many good pictures available on www.womensmeetandtrain.blogspot.com

Next race on Sunday 23rd in Swords. The fourth and last winter race will take place at the beginning of February.

Three team medals at Inter Counties

Heavy snow and white fields that once bore grass were the settings for the All Ireland Inter Counties Cross Country Championships, which were held in Gransha Park, Derry last Sunday. It was not a case of representing Sportsworld, but representing your county. This championship gathers the best handful of distance runners from each county throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland (athletics is an all-island sport like rugby). As a general rule, a top fifteen finish at your own county senior cross country championship (early November) leads you to being selected as a team member; though individual entries are welcome too regardless of whether you ran in your county senior championships.

The biggest incentive behind running in heavy snowfall against the island’s best is that the top three runners were guaranteed a spot on the Irish team for the upcoming European Cross Country Championships, due to be held in Albufeira PT on Sunday week. Nobody from our club actually made the international team, but some came pretty close.

Senior Women

We were lead home by a magnificent Eimear Power (representing Co Clare), whose husband finished in the leading bunch of the men’s race but declined an offer of a place on the plane to Portugal due to injury concerns. Eimear also won team gold with Clare in the B category (therefore the Clare women’s team will be re-classified as an A team for next year’s event). Catriona (Donegal) had a magnificent run, and thus put the ghost of a disappointing Dublin senior XC behind her. Our three Meath women were next in – the two Brady’s and Lucy. Well done girls.

Senior Men

Phil was the eight Dubliner past the post (six men to score), and he was followed home by Kildare man Paul.

Well done to everyone for making such a long trip away to Northern Ireland and for running in extremely uncomfortable conditions.

Lanza 2010

Sportsworld’s finest descended upon the remote and idyllic setting of La Santa to compete in the 2010 challenge. As the bus winded along the back roads of the island and the huge complex emerged on the skyline, the hairs stood on the back of your neck if not for the four days of feisty competition then at least for the sunshine and gelato. The boys and girls located to their quarters for the week as follows:

The Boot Room – Michael (Sweet Tooth) Cunningham, Paul (Federer) Duffy, Will (Prodigal) Greensmyth and Phil (Suggs) Kilgannon

The Shoes Room – Rachel, Susan, Mary, Mairead and Caitriona

The Activity Room – Emily, Eilis, Breda, Val, Orlagh and Cliona

The Pipe n Slippers Room – Sean and Conor

The Family Room – Declan, Kathleen and Mr. O’Callaghan.

The Green Team Room – Destination Unknown

Well the week started as it meant to continue. Karaoke was kicked off by… yep myself, with a polished, crooner – style rendition of ‘It must be Love’ by Madness. After the standing ovation gradually subsided Will and myself then gave a stirring performance of the timeless ‘Wish you were here’ by Pink Floyd, dedicated to Eoiny Fellony who couldn’t be with us this time. In fairness it was a hard act to follow but Val and Cliona gave it their best and tore into’ Paradise City’, by Guns n Roses. Val eventually put down the microphone when the barman was finished sweeping the floor and turned off the lights.

I decided to just undertake the first two days as I wanted to focus on my crazy golf, with Conor and Sean taking a similiar course of action as the all day bingo was too good to resist. Breda didn’t compete either through injury and well she’s won enough things already. Paul dutifully took out the 10k, taking on pacemaking duties unnecessarily and loosing time overall as a result, but must have made an impression on the Danes. He was singled out for special treatment and before the ridge run had even got as far as the road a big lad (Thor or something like that) knocked him to the ground. Well, they build them tough down in Delvin and this only served to ignite Paul’s challenge. He bounced back up and himself and myself pulled back a few places and then ran a great race together, catching ground up the hills and then breaking the Danes on the downhill descent. Paul powered home to take fifth on the day. Michael ran steadily the first three days, in 22nd place with the half marathon to come. Willo struggled on the first day, a little under the weather (and homesick). He soldiered through the next two days though with lots of chicken soup and hugs. Will was in 88th at this point but like the Munster Man that he is was getting stronger as the week went on. Then the gauntlet was really thrown down. Breda offered Will sweets if he could finish 75th overall. This sounded unfeasable, I mean 13 places in one race – but with the flicker in Will’s eye, we knew it was on. Well back in the boot room on Tuesday night we had much to ponder. Paul was in the top ten but wanted to push up the board, Michael wanted to crack into the top 20 and Will wanted…sweets. There was much soul searching and head scratching over cups of tea and fig rolls, but on Wednesday it was the Irish who plundered and the Danes who floundered as each man pulled back in the region of 3 minutes on the half marathon and each personal target was obtained. Paul came 6th, Michael 17th and Will, yes 75th. Declan runs for Crusaders so was running for Sportsworld on the QT, so I won’t mention that he relished the chance to run in the Red strip again, storming to 31st overall. Declan there’s always a spot on the cross team for ya;)

The girls blazed a trail,, winning second team, with four in the top ten finishers. Mary was fifth overall, looking composed and effortless throughout. Kathleen was not far behind with a brilliant 7th after overcoming considerable hamstring problems recently. Mairead was eighth, also winning her age group. Rachel showed her class, finishing the week strongly to claim tenth. Susan ran consistently through the week, finishing a strong 13th. Orlagh, who had spent most of the past two years on the foam roller produced a fantastic week of running to come home in twelfth. We were all delighted to see her back running so well. Catriona debuted in La Santa this year, finishing in 27th – a great finish with which she must be delighted. Cliona also completed the challenge, a highly impressive achievement of a little training. She finished in 65th, leaving plenty of runners in her wake. There was also debate and conjecture heard coming from the Shoes Room, where the girls were heard to remark that the senior team was looking a bit ‘light weight’.

Well that was it bar the shouting. There was an epic tennis match with Breda, Michael, Will and myself playing like a sketch from a Marx Brothers film. Paul was a studious umpire and ball boy. Think Father Ted meets Wimbledon. There was the perennial dancefest Wednesday night, where Will and myself found a soul mate on the dance floor in Eilis and we danced the night away. Val was a force of nature, still going strong at 6am. Eilis was not having this and stormed down to the disco in her PJ’s, with hair curlers still in, frog-marching Val and Mark back to the room. Val was grounded on thrursday, but after judicial review was allowed out for the final banquet/barbeque. We reminisced on a great week, which went by far too fast and contemplated arriving home to the snow and the IMF with trepidation. But hey, we’ll always have Lanzorote.
