Meet and Train in Bushy Park

Sportsworld Running Club are delighted to be hosting the first ever Meet and Train Cross Country race to be held in Bushy Park.

The race takes place this Sunday 13th Jan at 11am, the more supporters the better.

Directions are available on the club website here.

Good luck to all taking part.

Emyvale 10k

The race report below comes from Gavin Finlay who placed 2nd in the Emyvale 10K on January 1st.

No better way to expunge that New Year’s Day hangover than a fresh 10k race through the undulating botharíns of Co. Monaghan. The spontaneous and last minute races are often the best. And so it was on the forst day of 2013. Owing to a bet (or experiment) that a decent time could be achieved after an Irish wedding and 3 hours sleep, a lone Sportsworld member took to the starting line alongside a few hundred Ulster folk for the annual Emyvale 10k. Organised by the Jolly Joggers to raise funds for the Monaghan Cancer Treatment Support Group, it was in the best tradition of rural fun runs – friendly, laid-back banter and the ubiquitous post-race tea and cake spread.

Some walked, some jogged, some ran but all had a great sense of achievement when they crossed the finishing line. For some to finish the course was special to them as it was a great personal achievement. There was also a terrific atmosphere in the village and in the Community Centre afterwards.

In the men’s 10k the prolific Gary O’Hanlon (Clonliffe Harriers) destroyed the field in an impressive 31:20. Sportsworld’s Gavin Finlay lead the chasing peloton, finishing in 2nd place, a fair distance behind in 34:30. Not too far behind was local juvenile hotshot Patrick Murphy (Glaslough Harriers). In the Ladies 10k Donna Evans won in 37.56, followed by Barbara Murray and Nuala Reilly.

The Battle continues in Tymon

Conor Kenny wrote a short piece about the South Dublin Cross Country in Tymon Park yesterday, January 5th 2013. It originally appeared on Facebook but is posted below. Apologies in advance to anyone not mentioned.  Full results on BHAA.ie

The Battle continues. Again, Killian McMorrow prevailed by 45 seconds after surging ahead on lap 3.

More importantly, brilliant runs at BHAA Tymon XC yesterday by Jean Wilson who ran a fantastic last hill to claim 3rd. Super finish by Phil Kilgannon to claim second in the men’s race. Also lots of really good runs by Aileen Melody and Majella in her first BHAA race in a long time. Great running by Caitriona who flew up the last hill. Paul Duffy, as ever was gliding over the mud. Philip Kerr, who got to bed at 4, still left us Vets for dust.
Great up front running by Gareth Murran too whose biggest dilemma was choosing which shoes to wear!

Eoin O’Brien put in a sterling run too and everyone dis their club proud.Great to see ex Chairman, Paul O’Connell, still (really) running the BHAA show (he should be kidnapped for our own race). A brilliant run by Jim, husband of Breda Browne.

Finally, to my ill adversary Stephen Willoughby thank you for your helpful shouts at the right points on the course. Lovely to see Ellen and Breda out cheering us on even though they couldn’t race today. As for the picture? If you look closely you can just see Killian say “Cheerio Conor”
Thank you to everyone for making a January morning memorable

Lanza 2012

Although missing Emily this year the Sportsworld teams took part in the 24th 4 day running challenge in Lanzarote, Spain.

A great time was had by all with plenty of tails to be retold at the upcoming Christmas party. We had the highest numbers of Sportsworld runners representing the club for some years. Ours men’s team took gold with the ladies narrowly missing out to a strong Crusaders team. Great individual performances meant we swept the awards ceremony. Full results are online. The photos are on Facebook. A taster of the action is below to wet your appetite for next year.

BHAA Bank Of Ireland Beach Race

A bright but windy morning saw a few club members take on the Bank Of Ireland organised beach race on Dollymount Strand. The distance may have been longer than the advertised 5km but it didn’t stop our runners. Ed McEntee having recently been promoted to a new age category took second in the category and 9th over all. Our club statesmen Stephen, Conor and Killian ran the first lap in formation chasing Phillip Kerr.

Full results are on the BHAA website. The next race is the Irish Life 6km Combined Cross Country race on Saturday 24th Nov at 11am in Santry.

Leinster Novice 2012

On a wet and cold Sunday October bank holiday the ladies and mens Novice and Masters teams headed for Avondale House near Rathdrum in County Wicklow. The course has become  known in the past for it’s “Hill of Death”, lucking enough this year we didn’t have to go up the hill we just  run through a bog at the bottom of it.

The race was a little slower than the Dublin Novice a few weeks before. The conditions and course made it a completely different race. It came down to a battle of wills against the slog and the mud. With tumbles and sore bodies aplenty well done to all those that fought the battle.

Dublin Novice 2012

Well done to everyone running in today’s Dublin Novice. In better conditions than last year both teams ran well. There was great support out on the course which is always appreciated. Lots of photos on Facebook.
