Sunday May 1st and the beginning of summer. For anyone around Dublin over the weekend the weather was anything but summer. However on the morning of our neighbours Tallaght Ac 5k we were spared the worst of the previous days hail and sleet. Conditions were actually pleasant enough apart from a breeze that became very noticeable in the last 2k.

Race Reporter Padraig

It was a first for me. Its the first time I ran a race in a sleep deprived state owing to a 9 day old at home keeping me awake all night and also my first race that doubled as a novice championship race. The feel of the race was very different to the larger club races or corporate events. The amount and variety of club jerseys were evident on arrival at the track and it was great to see over 400 people coming out to run in the event.

Having began track training sessions recently I made a mental note that the last 300m will be fast and its nothing I haven’t done before. This will come in handy for the PB I told myself, sleep deprivation can make a person deluded too! Sportsworld was well represented at the race with 18 runners lining up at the start.

Registration/number pick up was smooth and hassle free like a lot of the club races tend to be. After warm-up we were called to the start line and before we knew it we were off. The consensus before the race was that the first half was fast and it proved to be true. Passing 2k I glanced at the watch to realise I was moving pretty well and I felt ok too, I was singing the praise of all those track sessions heading down towards Tymon park however that didn’t last too long as the course turned left and on to Airton Road and into a stiff enough breeze also the only long drag of the race and its here that I realised I had gone out too fast with 2k left.

Eventually the gym/clubhouse came into view and then on to the track for those aforementioned 300 long…….. long metres. Despite being almost home I didn’t have anything left to push on in the final K and thus learned a hard lesson about 5k pacing. Its a nice distance but can be brutal also.

After the race refreshments and goodie bag hand out was smooth and seemed to be organised and well run by Tallaght AC youngest members. The T shirt was excellent quality for a race that was so cheap to enter.

Thanks to Emily, Myles, Joe and other sportsworld supporters who were dotted along the course and who offered great encouragement. Thanks also to Joe who took a nice group photo of all the team after the race. Well done to Conor McCarthy who was the first Sportsworld male home and Sandra Gowran who was the first Sportsworld lady home. Well done to Damien Geraghty also who had never ran a 5k before and who wanted to break 20 mins today, he did just that with 15 seconds to spare.

Last but certainly not least well done to Conor, Stephen, Paul & Wes who picked up the 2nd place team medals with 3 excellent finishing times.
